Al Ulbrickson was an American rowing coach, born on November 28, 1938, in Seattle, Washington. He attended the University of Washington and rowed for the university's crew team. Later, he became the head coach of the University of Washington rowing team and held the position from 1969 until 1987. During his long tenure, he led the team to eight national championships. He was also the assistant coach of the U.S. Olympic rowing team in 1972, 1980, and 1984. In 1984, he served as the head coach of the U.S. Olympic men's rowing team that won a gold medal in the coxed four event. Ulbrickson was inducted into the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 and the National Rowing Foundation Hall of Fame in 1999. He died on March 15, 2014, at the age of 75.
